While I fully intended a lackluster performance in this nothing of a meet at UMBC, I wasn't guaranteed the opportunity to be ghetto pimp slapped by Coppin St's Ghetto Pimpin' Nickie Peters. Peters, who by now must be in his 10th year of eligibility somehow, is a rather ridiculous cartoon character of an 800/miler from the heavily jamaican urban school of Coppin St. He just exudes with style which can only be described as "ghetto pimpin'" and has been elavated to a full fledged cartoon superhero in the past two years after ghetto pimp slapping BJ in cross country, winning a sub-1:50 800 in the armory while Zombie Nation was blarring over the loudspeakers, running about 4:02 while taking his band of sprinters to a 9:50ish DMR at IC's last year, and then winning the IC4A 800 last year (in the same meet) after having his achilles tendon essentially torn off with 50 meters to go by some misplaced spikes. He was officially DQ'ed for cutting in too soon, but as far as we're concerned, he's the ghetto pimpinest people's champion of the meet.
So, fast forward to today. I didn't feel like taking pace, and frankly no one else did either. The 1500 field was pretty good, but all the mid distance guys didn't feel like running fast, meaning that the distance people were forced on to pace to try to drain our kicks. Well, that didn't work too well for them, and we came through the 800 in a cakewalk of a 2:09. I had decided beforehand that I would like to experiment with a 600 meter kick today, even though I knew full well Peters would come for me, so I took off with 600 to go, gapping the field by a good chunk by the 400 to go mark (and yes, I glanced over my shoulder to see that...so sue me). Anyway, at 270 to go, the ghetto pimpin atmosphere reached full saturation, raining down a pimp slap of epic proportions to my feeble unmotivated self. I didn't feel like kicking hard, so I sort of let him go, eventually losing by a second and a half. St. Francis' ernstwhile Maloney character also passed me in my fit on unmotivation. I figured I'd let him do it now, so I could get back to beating him every single time I race him, as was the trend before.
So, that's my story about Ghetto Pimpin Nickie Peters.
